Moen began his career as a keyboard player in a Norwegian metal band at the age of 13. His interest in jazz became serious when studying at Musicians Institute, Los Angeles and was further developed at Berklee College of Music, Boston.
I wanted a band rather than a “Bernt Moen Trio” project, hence the formation of Dualistic. I felt that this setting offered more freedom when composing the material. I´ve always been a fan of heavy riffs and the extended harmony of improvised music, so it felt natural to meld the styles together and just write music that I liked regardless of “stylistic restrictions”. I wanted the basic sound of the band to be an acoustic piano trio as I enjoy the format and interaction it offers when it comes to the improvisational aspects of the music.
We wanted to capture the raw energy of a live performance combined with all the creative tools a studio production offered. We strived to create a natural balance between the written and improvised parts, something that was essential as the musical expression is both organic and strictly arranged at the same time.
The bandmembers are all seasoned musicians with a substantial amount of releases, both as bandleaders and session musicians.
Moen is currently working as an associate professor in piano performance along with bass player and colleague, PhD associate professor Fredrik Sahlander. Rounding up the lineup is drummer and colleague, Tobias Øymo Solbakk.
